What classes are offered each semester?

Several sections of all levels are offered autumn and spring semesters. A limited number of courses may be offered in summer semesters but is not guaranteed. Check Buckeye Link Master Schedule or contact us in advance.

Can I minor in ASL?

YES. As of Autumn 2020 the ASL Program offers a minor in American Sign Language Studies. Our ASL 1101-1103 series fulfills the university's general education (GE) foreign language requirement as well as the pre-requisites into the minor.

All of the ASL class sections that fit in my schedule are full. What can I do?

Put yourself on the waitlist for each class section that fits in your schedule. Contact the instructor prior to the start of the semester and show up to the first class to indicate your interest.

I'm on a waitlist for ASL 1101. Can the instructor sign me in?

No. Our classes are capped at 24 students to ensure quality interaction with your classmates and your instructor. Waitlists are run automatically by the OSU Registrar through the first Friday of every semester. Instructors can only sign in a student after that IF there is a seat available.

What are my chances of getting in to the class if I'm on a waitlist?

It all depends on the circumstances for any given semester, such as if and how many seats become available and your position on the waitlist. The ASL Program has no control over the waitlist process.

What can I expect in OSU's ASL classes?

What is ASL course?

This course investigates linguistic analyses of ASL, through both lecture and hands-on activities. Discussion of the linguistic structure at all levels (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse) is included. Students are not required to have previous coursework in linguistics.

What is the fourth ASL course?

The fourth ASL course is a more intensive approach to the study of ASL skills, grammar, and structure. The primary goal of this course is for students to achieve a level of competency in ASL.

What is sociolinguistics?

Sociolinguistics, demographics of the Deaf community; study of Deaf subgroups with different sociological, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds; sociolinguistic integration of community members with the larger population in their cultural/ethnic community. Knowledge of American Sign Language not required.

How many semesters of high school ASL?

Okay, state law says one semester of "college ASL" = one year of "high school ASL.". HOWEVER, if you look at actual classroom contact hours, one year of high school is the equivalent of 4 semesters of college at 3-units per semester.

How many contact hours are there in a college class?

A typical college class consists of only 3 hours per week times 15 or 16 weeks (depending on the college). That would be 45 to 48 contact hours. Thus it takes four semesters of college to equal the actual classroom contact hours of a one-year high school course. So -- the "system is messed up.".

How many hours of high school credit do you need in Florida?

High School Credit: According to Florida statutes, a class must consist of 75 hours to meet a semester requirement (including study and class time), or 130 hours to qualify for a year credit. Two college semesters count as four high school semesters.

How many breaks are there in a three hour course?

It is because a three-hour once-a-week course will typically have two breaks of 10 minutes each. (2 times 10 = 20 extra minutes). A three-hour twice-a-week course breaks the seat-time (150 minutes) into two parts.

However, it is up to your individual school’s discretion whether or not they will accept our courses for credit. Credit is awarded by your school, not by Start ASL.
