Withdrawing is not the same thing as dropping a class early in the semester. When a student drops a class, it disappears from their schedule. After the “drop/add” period, a student may still have the option to Withdraw. Withdrawal usually means the course remains on the transcript with a “W” as a grade.
“A withdrawal will be on the transcripts but does not affect GPA.” Croskey also noted that there aren't any limits to how many classes one can drop because they don't go on the transcript. Withdrawals though are limited and can look bad if there are too many on a student's transcript.

Sadly, in academia, there's also the word “Withdraw.” Withdrawing means you drop a class after the allowed add/drop period ends. Depending on your college, the drop deadline may be before the second week of online classes begins. Review your calendar to see how long you have been in the class. Complete the drop form if you meet the drop requirement, or contact your counselor about the drop requirement.
If you withdraw from a course during an otherwise "normal" semester, most people judging your transcript from the perspective of graduate school admissions will assume that you were not doing well in the course. As a general rule of thumb, having one “W” should not be too big of a deal. However, if you continue to get them, medical schools will see this as a red flag in your potential to do well at medical school. Myth 2: You should always take a bad grade over a “W.”
Students who wish to receive treatment in other ways have the option of submitting a re-enrollment based on an alternative process, which can be approved on a case by case basis. Any students who wish to utilize this process should speak to a case manager.
Undergraduates must consult with an academic advisor. Graduate students must consult with their academic department and the Graduate School. If graduate students intend to return to their academic program in the future, they must also complete a Graduate Student Leave of Absence Form .
Due to time constraints, it is less likely that late fall withdrawal students will be able to return in the spring. We recommend students who take a fall semester withdrawal plan to return no sooner than the summer or fall semesters in the upcoming year, with proper documentation.
Students have two options when taking a medical withdrawal: an Administrative Medical Withdrawal or a Self-Medical Withdrawal. Medical withdrawals can happen for physical and/or mental health situations. Our case managers can help students determine which option would be best for them.
Go to BU BRAIN. Click Student tab. Select 'Registration' menu item. Select 'Add/Drop or Withdraw from Courses' menu item. Select TERM. To withdraw from a course, click on the drop-down menu next to the course, select 'Web Withdraw'. Click SUBMIT CHANGES.
Note: You cannot drop your last class for fall or spring through this process; summer and winter classes can be dropped through this process, but with date restrictions. If you intend to drop your last class, you must fill out a Semester/University Withdrawal form.
In the vast majority of circumstances, a petition to withdraw from a course after the end of classes does not meet the timeliness requirement.
If you have a physical or mental health issue that interferes with your course work substantially enough that you request to withdraw form a course, your medical situation is likely significant enough that you should withdraw from all courses from the semester. It is quite uncommon for Harpur College to grant a withdrawal from only one course for mental or physical health reasons. Students wishing to pursue a medical withdrawal for the semester may wish to pursue the matter with the Dean of Students Office. If you wish to petition Harpur College to withdraw from only one course for mental or physical health reasons, you should explain why this situation affects only this course and submit official documentation of the circumstances.
I think my mental health is the worst it’s ever been. I don’t know what to do anymore. I can’t be the only one who feels that way.
Excuse the petty rant but...Is it just me or is the school's new two-factor authentication system a royal pain in the ass? I signed up for it the day it was announced (I figured since it'll be mandatory one day anyways, I'd mine as well get used to it) and I've regretted it every day since.
