Numerous programs — from fellowships, grants-in-aid, and loans to assistantships, subsidized housing, and child care programs — can help students reduce the costs of graduate school. Some programs are need-based and are administered through the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.

Financial need is the difference between your cost of attendance for the academic year and the amount you and your family are expected to contribute toward those costs. Prizes are determined through competitive processes or in recognition of an outstanding ability in some area of creative/ scholarly endeavor.
Some or all instruction for all or part the Academic Year may be delivered remotely. Tuition and fees have been set regardless of the method of instruction and will not be refunded in the event instruction occurs remotely for any part of the Academic Year.
Actual tuition and fees are subject to change by the University of California as determined to be necessary or appropriate. Final approved tuition and fee levels may differ from the amounts presented. If different tuition and fee levels are approved, your costs and your financial aid awards may be adjusted.
All late fees are waived for covered individuals and no requirement to borrow additional funds is imposed. Additionally, covered individuals are granted full access to classes, libraries, and all other University facilities and services while disbursement of payments under chapter 31 or 33 of Title 38 U.S.C. is pending.
If financial help will be needed beyond the funds that you or your family can provide, you should make the necessary applications for financial assistance well in advance of enrollment.
Campus-Based Fees are mandatory fees that support student services, programs, and facilities. At Berkeley, they include the fees that make up the Berkeley Campus Fee and the AC Transit Class Pass Fee.
The Student Services Fee is charged to all registered students and funds services that are necessary to students but not part of the University’s programs of instruction, research, or public service.
Tuition is charged to all registered students and provides general support for the University’s operating budget in including costs related to general campus faculty and instructional support; libraries and other academic support; institutional support; operations and maintenance of buildings; student services; and student financial aid.
These are fees and service charges that may be assessed for purposes such as: covering the cost of non-instructional services or materials; encouraging compliance with administrative rules; replacing or repairing equipment which is damaged by students beyond normal wear and tear; recovering costs through rental charges for the student's use of University-owned tools, musical instruments, or other equipment; or covering the cost of other materials or services necessary to provide a special supplemental educational experience of direct benefit to the student. Applications for University fellowships and graduate scholarships areconsidered only once a year as part of the admission process. Awardsare made for the academic year beginning with the fall semester. U.S.citizens and permanent residents should complete the “Free Applicationfor Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA) for determination of financial need.
Graduate stipends are not subject to U.S. income tax deductions butare taxable income. For teaching appointments, salary is typically paidin five equal installments per semester. Many appointments carry thebenefit of tuition and fee remission, which offsets either a portion or all ofassessed tuition and fees. Some departments charge Course Materials and Services Fee for specific classes, such as those with science or computer labs, photography labs, art supplies, or similar costs. Classes with this fee should be noted in the Class Schedule, although the amounts may not be known at the time of publication.
Class Pass Transit Fee provides free transportation on all Alameda County buses. $48 Class Pass Transit Fee is assessed to any UC student not registered in the previous spring semester on the Berkeley campus. Class Pass Transit Fee becomes non-refundable once your first session begins.
The $100 cancellation fee is non-refundable except in specific circumstances. Once you enroll in at least one class in the summer term, you will be subject to this fee.
The Drop for Non Payment process runs only up to 1 week prior to the beginning of each session.
The Document Management Fee provides unlimited official transcripts sent first class mail or in person at Cal Student Central.
Domestic visitor fees apply to those who are not currently enrolled in a degree program at a University of California campus. This includes all U.S. college students, high school students (in the non-residential program), and non-students (general public). *Fees are subject to change.
Class Pass Transit Fee becomes non-refundable once your first session begins. For Summer 2021, the Class Pass Fee is refundable if you withdraw by the refund deadline of your first enrolled session.
