Paul Castellani, Area 1S Referee Administrator, offers his thoughts on the importance of understanding and knowing how to defuse and control, if not eliminate, the problems that come with more competitive matches. As competition increases, players acquire improved skills and a stronger attitude toward winning, Referees must be prepared for the increased emotions and control problems. Referees that are unprepared contribute to problems to a greater extent than anyone would expect. This can be remedied by proper continuous education. Please read this short memorandum Paul has provided.
Many States have recently passed laws requiring training for Concussion Awareness & Safety as well as Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Key elements from State legislation: 1 Information: Need to inform parents and players about concussions. 2 Training: Require Concussion Awareness Training for Officials (e.g., Coaches, Referees, RCs, etc.) similar to the Center for Disease Control’s online course. 3 Participation Release: Most laws require a Medical Release before a player suspected of having a concussion may return to play.
For training required from non-AYSOU sites, volunteers must print the Certificate of Completion upon completing the training. Instructions are provided for Volunteers under the RESOURCES tab for uploading the Certificate of Completion and receiving a certification. Regions are provided with instructions for setting up verifying certificates and for using a Course Roster to mark volunteers complete/passed for a certification.
Participation Release: Most laws require a Medical Release before a player suspected of having a concussion may return to play.
One of the most important parts of the AYSO National Referee Program is the AYSO Referee Certification and Training Program . All AYSO referees are required to be certified and trained.
AYSO maintains an online library of Referee and Assessor Course lesson plans & exams and Instructor Course materials in AYSOU. Referee Forms are also available online .
AYSO has partnered with the CDC to use the Heads Up program for concussion awareness materials. Goto aysou.org, login and click on "Online Courses" in the menu to take the CDC: Concussion Course. You will receive credit for this training upon completion.
A record of your attendance will be entered into the AYSO National database and you will be issued a referee badge upon completing the class (and passing the test). You will also be issued a uniform if you are in region 1 and do not already have one.
For 10U or higher levels, you will need to start with the Basic Referee Course for what is called a "Regional Referee" badge. If you are a youth (12 - 18 years of age) who wants to start refereeing you have the same options for courses as adults but we will provide additional on the field mentoring.
The Regional Referee Course is a 7 hour (plus exam time) in-depth AYSO sanctioned class covering the full laws of soccer. It is designed to provide you with the information and tools so that you can start refereeing with confidence. This does not include time for the Safe Haven certification which can be done online, or maybe offered at the end of one of the classes. The course does cover the full FIFA Laws Of The Game. The emphasis of the course is on grounding you in the basics with the expectations that as you gain experience and start refereeing at higher levels you will also pursue more advanced classes. In order to successfully complete this course you must attend all of the class sessions and pass a final exam.
This course is designed for parents or anyone else (12 years of age minimum) who wants to start refereeing. No prior experience is necessary even if you have no knowledge of the game of soccer. We will give you the tools you need to referee a Safe, Fair, and Fun game.
Review the referee training calendar to select your course (s), then signup on AYSOU. Note: you may take a training class in another AYSO region in our area as long as you obtain the correct certification for your age group.
You must be certified by AYSO even if you have prior referee experience. If you have a current USSF badge (grade 8 or higher), you may cross certify.
10U-12U: You need to have Regional Referee certification. There are two options for Regional Referee training, the online course on AYSOU with the in person companion class or attending all three sessions of the in Basic Referee course. Either path ends with a written exam. If you are already an 8U Official, there is an 8U to Regional Referee Upgrade option as well.
The AYSO Player Registration Form is an official document that contains your emergency contact information and serves as a medical release form.
If you participate in supplemental programs, such as Scrimmage Programs or Turkey Tournament teams, you will need to provide a Registration form then as well.
