Some of the questions we will consider include: How do we talk about literature, both in class and in other academic environments? How do we see a literary text as a document that speaks from and speaks to a culture of readers? As a shared platform for exploring these questions, we will read a selection of contemporary American stories and poems as well as a novel.

This offering of Poetry II focuses on the techniques used to craft poems, as well as the content from which their ideas originate. We’ll study poems drawn from images observed in the natural world and from images captured in fine art, and poems that serve as witnesses to societies’ injustices and that take on the perspectives of personas and self-portraits. We’ll investigate how these poems’ authors employ lines, stanzas, diction, syntax, musicality, and other poetic elements. We’ll find inspiration for writing original poems in the regional ecosystem, the campus museums, current news and events, historical documents, and other sources outside ourselves. And we’ll refine those poems through the process of workshopping and extensive revision.

Activities will include attending literary events, student presentations, research projects using university archives and collections, and possibly an outdoor field trip.
