Overlap each row at least 3 to 4 inches. If you live in an area with inclement weather, you should consider using a special leak barrier protector.
Head lap: Shortest distance from the butt edge of an overlapping shingle to the upper edge of a shingle in the second course below. The triple coverage portion of the top lap of strip shingles.
asphalt-saturated felt, starting at the eaves and lapping upper courses over lower by a minimum of 2 inches. Vertical joints should lap a minimum of 4 inches and be offset by at least 6 feet in successive rows (see Figure 2-2).
In both headwall and sidewall conditions, unless the exterior wall is brick, you should see a gap of at least 1½ inches between the bottom of the exterior wall-covering material and the top of the roof-covering material. You'll often see siding and stucco installed right down on top of the shingles.
The very top of the slate is called the “head.” When one slate overlaps another, that's called overlap. Pretty simple. When the head of a slate is overlapped by the slate two courses above it, that's called headlap — that's the critical overlap on a slate roof (Figure 2).
Overlap is when one slate overlaps another, whereas 'head lap' is when the head of a slate is overlapped by the slate two courses above it. On a slate roof this is the critical overlap and is necessary to prevent water penetration and leakage.
Roofing felt is required to overlap 2 inches over the lower felt course. The overlapping felt creates a secondary barrier for moisture and wicks water away from the shingles above and the sheathing below. Therefore, a 2-inch overlap provides redundancy at the edges where the barrier is weakest.
The side lap also is referred to as a side joint, vertical joint, keyway, bond line or rain course. As defined in the glossary of the NSA manual, it's “the longitudinal joint between two slate shingles”. Whenever one is installing a slate roof, it is absolutely imperative the side lap is a minimum of 3 inches.
Apply the WinterGuard centered on the hips before applying ordinary underlayment to the rest of the roof. (If WinterGuard is used along the eaves for protection against ice dams, apply it first, and then lap the WinterGuard from the hip over it.) 2.
There should be at least a 1" gap between siding materials and lower roof planes to prevent moisture intrusion behind the siding material. All new houses with wood, composite, and vinyl materials should be built in this manner.
The recommended maximum gap between roof sheathing boards for low-quality, 3-tab shingles is 1/4-inch. If asphalt shingles are installed over sheathing with gaps exceeding 1/4-inch, over time, these gaps may telegraph through and become visible.
Spaced Sheathing, also called Skipped Decking, refers to the construction details of the substrate which the cedar gets nailed to and thus secured to your home.
Typically, the peak pain of shingles is felt within 4 or 5 days after the first symptoms develop, and it comes along with a blistering rash. As the blisters scab over, the pain usually starts to disappear. In some cases, the pain does not go away. This is known as a condition called postherpetic neuralgia.
Three-Dimensional Shingles: See Laminated Shingles. Top Lap: That portion of the roofing covered by the succeeding course after installation.
The first sign of shingles, which is also called herpes zoster, is pain that might feel like burning or tingling on one side of your face, chest, back, or waist. It can be intense. You might also feel like you're coming down with the flu, with symptoms such as: Fever.
The blisters may look like chickenpox, but they are clustered together. The shingles rash can vary in color, depending on your skin tone. On darker skin, the rash may be pink, grayish, dark brown, or even purple. On lighter skin, it will be red.
