Remodeling Fiasco

I promised my wife I would arrange to have the wallpaper in our kitchen and laundry room removed. Then those areas would be repainted. I contacted a painter referred to me by a colleague and met him at our home to go over the plans.

Clarity is One of the Keys to Effective Management

I have seen similar breakdowns countless times in the senior management meetings, with my direct reports, and even within my family.

I think the next post is going to be a longer one in which I get into the “nitty-gritty” of understanding relative value units (RVUs) as they are used to measure physician productivity.

What is Joyce Epstein's framework?

Joyce Epstein’s framework of six types of family involvement (1995) is frequently cited in research and has been adopted by many practitioners, most notably the National Parent Teacher Association (National PTA, 1998). Epstein’s framework outlines six dimensions of parent-school partnerships:

How are family and community connections bundled together?

Both in research and practice, family and community connection activities are often bundled together in ways that may affect how the activities are conducted and how they are measured. Narrowing down these complex concepts to one single definition is not likely or even necessarily desirable. However, without a clear understanding of the way the concept is defined, it is difficult to understand how to create and sustain those connections that will achieve the intended results for students, schools, communities, and families. As Cahill (1996) suggests, we need to clarify the goals and underlying assumptions of various types of collaborations in order to have a positive impact on school improvement and student success. Working to create this “common language” in the field of family and community connections will support future research and practice so that it is clear and achieves intended results.

What is type 3 volunteer?

Type 3 Volunteering – Organizing volunteers and audiences to support the school and students. Providing volunteer opportunities in various locations and at various times

What is type 1 parenting?

Type 1 Parenting – Assisting families with parenting skills and setting home conditions to support children as students, as well as assisting schools to understand families

What is Parent-Child discussion?

Parent-child discussions and interactions about school-related issues and activities, including parental advice and guidance on academic decisions and course placements (Catsambis, 1998; Yonezawa, 2000).

What are some examples of parent-directed activities?

Parent-directed activities that connect students to out-of-school opportunities for learning and development, such as museum and library visits, private tutoring, and other enrichment opportunities (Cairney, 2000; Gutman & McLoyd, 2000; Tapia, 2000).

Why is it important to catalog family school activities?

Cataloging these kinds of activities is a useful step, but more work is needed to capture the variety of forms that family-school connections can take and create a common language in the field . The variety of definitions make it difficult to compare studies and models of parent involvement to one another. They also make analysis of the findings of multiple studies a challenge. For practitioners, this lack of clarity may lead to difficulty in making judgments about what kinds of activities to implement, how to implement them, and what results to expect from them.

What is perceived inequality of results and lack of role clarity?

Perceived inequality of results and lack of role clarity is a very common issue that comes up with our family business clients. So one of the first things we ask is: do you have clearly defined roles and responsibilities? I’m amazed how often family members don’t have clear roles, responsibilities and business goals. The lack of clarity creates fertile breeding ground for resentment, disappointment and conflict within the extended family.

What are the positive outcomes that will occur if you clarify roles and responsibilities?

The most positive outcomes we see when we help families clearly define their roles is a greater sense of confidence and autonomy in their work. Most people really appreciate knowing what’s expected of them. It’s the company’s job to help clearly define that and give employees the right resources and authority to produce results. When the family business begins to become more defined and structured in its roles it will be taking the first important step towards “professionalizing the firm”.

What are the consequences if you continue with unclear roles?

When a company has lack of clarity about roles and results it sends a subtle message to the entire organization about its overall role and results. When the company can take a strong and consistent approach to role clarity and accountability it sends a strong statement to everyone on the team about the importance of personal responsibility and accountability. It’s a great step towards creating a strong culture.

Why do you think the business has avoided outlining clear roles and responsibilities?

Many family businesses avoid clearly outlining roles and responsibilities because they somehow feel greater clarity and responsibilities might lead to greater accountability which could lead to difficult conversations about performance.
