Failed Courses On receipt of the second, non-passing grade the student will be dismissed. An Unsuccessfully completed course may only be repeated once (with the exception of NURS 493). Dental Hygiene students may repeat no more than two failed general education courses. Each failed course may be repeated only once.
First-Year Seminar The First Year Seminar allows you to become a member of your new community in a dynamic environment and to experience intellectual life at the university level.
Undergraduate students must have completed the term with a term and cumulative grade point average of 2.3 "C+" or higher. Graduate Students must have completed the term with a term/semester/trimester and cumulative grade point average of 3.0 "B" or higher.
2.0Current Academic Standing Policy To be in good academic standing, a GPA of 2.0 must be maintained. A student who is not in good academic standing is not eligible for graduation.

"C" is the minimum grade in the General Education Program. “C+” is the minimum passing grade in the core Nursing and Dental Hygiene Programs. “C*” grades in core Nursing, and core Dental Hygiene courses reflect that the course has not been successfully completed.
List your classes, the grade received, and the number of hours credit for each class. Refer to the Quality Point System table below to obtain the points for each grade. Multiply the points by the hours credit. Divide the total points by the total hours to arrive at your GPA.
Dean's List. The names of degree-seeking students who complete 12 or more graded hours in an academic semester and achieve a semester GPA of 3.670 or better are placed on the dean's list.

Knowing what high school and college courses a first-year applicant is taking or has remaining is beneficial in the application review, advising and registration processes.
Part of the deliberation regarding an applicant is an assessment of the applicant’s likelihood to persist and graduate. Applicants who have made a formal visit to campus can more accurately determine whether WCU is the best fit for them; therefore, they are more likely to remain enrolled and graduate. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to take part in a campus tour and presentation or an open house.
A copy of a college course schedule for any courses in progress during a student’s final year of high school also is very beneficial for advising and course registration purposes. Advanced standing credit cannot be awarded from a high school transcript.
Reference letters are not required of all applicants; however, submitted references become a part of the applicant’s record and are considered in the review process. In some cases, an applicant may be encouraged to submit recommendations. Reference letters should provide added insight into the ability and motivation of a student to perform at a competitive level at WCU. References do not replace the significance of academic records; rather, they supplement the required documentation.

Transfer students must have earned a minimum of 24 credit hours at Western Carolina University.
Students with a 2.75 GPA and higher can study internationally for a semester or a year by paying the Western Carolina University rate for tuition and fees and comparable room and board charges. Students pay tuition and fees to WCU and comparable room and board charges to the host institution.
Majors. A major consists of a group of prescribed and elective courses (totaling at least 27 hours) providing breadth and depth in an academic discipline, in two or more closely related disciplines, or in an interdisciplinary field of study. The requirements for a major in one discipline may include supporting courses selected from other disciplines.
A minimum of 25 percent of semester hours applied toward a bachelor’s degree must be earned through regular enrollment in Western Carolina University junior-senior level courses, including a minimum of twelve hours in junior-senior courses in the major field.
External instruction programs are defined as instruction received at a site (s) to which the student is sent by the enrolling institution to participate in instructional activities. Encompassed in the scope of external instruction are programs referred to as cooperative education, practical training, independent study, and open-circuit televised instruction.
The Interdisciplinary Studies Program will be approved by the primary’s department’s college curriculum committee and dean, with consultations attached from all departments involved in the program of study. The consultations/reviews should pay particular attention to the assessment component (s) of the proposed program and will approve or disapprove the special studies program. Once approved at the college level the plan is forwarded to the Office of the Provost for processing.
To submit an event for DegreePlus use this Qualtrics form DEGREEPLUS EVENT REQUEST FORM. All event requests are approved by the Associate Director of DegreePlus. Events that are submitted less than two weeks prior to the event are not guaranteed to be accepted for DegreePlus consideration due to the volume of requests.
You get a "co-curricular transcript." This is like your academic transcript, except it includes your experiences in DegreePlus as well as other valuable extracurricular and co-curricular experiences at WCU, such as internships, service, athletic, club, and Greek leadership, etc. This is a useful document to have as a reference to showcase all you have accomplished at WCU!
DegreePlus is a unique extracurricular program offered only at WCU.#N#Students tend to think their skills for success are only attached to their academic experiences; however, research has shown that students can enhance their skills when they get involved in extracurricular experiences outside the classroom. DegreePlus is designed to give you opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities that can provide the transferable skills you need to reach your goals for employment, graduate school, professional school, and other post-graduate plans. Even more, Degree Plus focuses on skills which can enhance your self-awareness and interpersonal relationships for a lifetime.

There is no cost to participate in DegreePlus, just your dedication. However, some events that are designated as DegreePlus opportunities may have an associated charge (for example, the Etiquette Reception and Alternative Spring Break).
You can put your DegreePlus participation on your resume or talk about it in interviews. When you let future employers or graduate/professional schools know what you've learned from DegreePlus, you set yourself apart and signal to them that you're motivated to do well. Progress grades are required for 100-200 level courses. Progress grades are required for student-athletes and other at-risk students enrolled in 300-400 level courses and encouraged for other students. Grades of “S” - Satisfactory and “U” - Unsatisfactory should be used for 100-200 level courses.
Progress grades at the 8th and 11th weeks are required for all courses, at all levels.
Grade replacement is governed by the Grade Replacement and Course Repeat policy published in the undergraduate catalog. Grade replacement is not an option for students at the graduate-level. Advisors should be aware that System Office regulation regarding grade replacement limits was eased due to COVID.
